South Putnam golfers win on fifth card vs. Rockville

Wednesday, April 27, 2011

The South Putnam boys' golf team picked up its sixth win of the season in thrilling fashion Monday. After the top four scores were tallied for South Putnam and Rockville, both teams were tied at 177 each. They moved to the fifth scorecard and the Eagles edged out the Rox 45-46 to pick up the win.

Dylan Gilber, Alex Eickhoff and Sam Gould all posted scores of 44, while Derek Chestnut and Alex Kelly chipped in rounds of 45.

"This was a fun match, even with the steady rain," South Putnam head coach Brian McClure said. "The kids continued to play hard. We knew it was going to be a close match. The whole team had a chance to watch Eickhoff birdie the par three ninth hole. As it turned out, we had to have that birdie to win the match.

"Its good to see the kids competing hard and getting wins to show for it. We understand that the season is still young and we have a lot of improving to do yet if we want to continue to compete," McClure said.
