Retaining wall at CHS damaged by recent heavy rain

CLOVERDALE -- Recent heavy rains left their mark at Cloverdale High School with damage to the school's north retaining wall.

Superintendent Carrie Milner told the school board at Monday's meeting the problem springs from simply too much rain and the water building up behind the wall.

"The wall is higher than the ground behind it, so it simply had nowhere to go," Milner said.

She said the school has received two bids so far, but the expenditure will be approved at a later date. For now, things need to dry out before they can even think about doing the work.

"It's going to take some sunshine to get us ready," Milner said.

The board approved a change to the price of lunches. The federal government wants schools to receive as much in reimbursement for paid lunches as it does for students who receive free and reduced lunches.

Currently Cloverdale, like many other schools, receives less in payment for full-priced lunches than it does for federal reimbursement for free and reduced lunches combined with the free and reduced price to students.

The price will go from $2.30 to $2.40.

"This will not get us there, but it will show that we are in good faith trying to get there," Milner said.

Additionally, the cost of adult lunches will actually be reduced from $3.75 to $3.

Milner announced the last student day for the year will be May 27, with graduation at 4 p.m. May 28 and the last teacher day on May 31.

She also said Kim Rich was named the 2011 teacher of the year.

The board accepted the retirements of elementary teacher Jane Irwin, high school teachers Sandy Phipps and Carolyn Mann, maintenance man Forest Kean and his wife, middle school custodian Rosalie Kean.

Board members Linda Mann and Tony Hacker each took a moment to express their appreciation to the retiring teachers and the Keans for their years of service.

The board also accepted the resignation of high school teacher Amanda Hampton and the hiring of David Petty as an assistant football coach.

  • As a past construction worker, I recommend a cheap repair; when we built retaining walls, we put "weep holes" in every few feet, with a thin layer of sand between the dirt and wall. A few simple drilled holes will suffice instead of tearing down and rebuilding this wall.
