Iggy Pop live collection a treat

I wasn't sure what to expect from four CDs of Iggy Pop concerts. On one hand, Iggy is a classic to a certain group of fans, and he's made some great records over the years.

On the other hand, his live shows have always been known as much for stage antics that have included rolling in broken glass, vomiting and even exposing himself to the crowd.

Luckily, "Roadkill Rising: The Bootleg Collection 1977-2009" is an audio recording, not video.

But all this sells short the quality of this collection, set for release from Shout! Factory on May 17. These four discs stand as a testament to the performer Iggy is on stage.

Each of the four discs represents a decade from the '70s to the '00s, but doesn't necessarily feature music originally from that decade. For example, "The Passenger," released in 1977, comes from a 1994 performance in Phoenix. The performance of "Fun House," from the 1970 Stooges' album of the same name, comes from a 2007 concert in Spain.

All this stands as a testament to Iggy's ability to mix the eras of his career and continue to bring energy to songs he's sang for more than a quarter of a decade.

Some of Iggy's best work can be heard here, including "I Wanna Be Your Dog," "China Girl," "Real Wild Child" and "Lust for Life." We also find that "The Godfather of Punk" knows his golden oldies with cuts like "Gloria," "You Really Got Me" and "Hang on Sloopy."

Culled from 20 shows over a 32-year span, "Roadkill Rising" is only the second official live album Iggy has released in his career. As such, it's a must for his fans.
