Initial drug take-back event successful

Friday, May 13, 2011

To the Editor:

I would like to personally thank everyone who participated in the Greencastle Police Department's first Drug Take Back event on April 30.

I want to thank the Greencastle High School for the use of their parking lot for the event. I want to thank the following people for their assistance with the event: Greencastle High School Assistant Principal Russ Hesler, PIE Board Member Becky Brothers, and Capt. Mike Hanlon and Officer Darrel Bunten with the Greencastle Police Department.

This year's event included approximately 62 different vehicles driving through, dropping off approximately 171 pounds of medications.

In the state of Indiana, approximately 60 agencies participated and approximately 8,096 pounds of medications were collected.

I would like to thank the following businesses for their assistance with this event: McDonald's for donating value meal coupons, S & W Feed Center for weighing the 20 boxes of medications collected, and Putnam County Hospital Pharmacy for donating sharp containers and haz-mat bags.

I hope this year's event is the first of many to come in our community. Thanks again for helping make Greencastle and Putnam County a safer place to live.
