Greencastle's Harriet Watson defeated Northview's Miranda Brossman 6-4 and 6-3 in the second round of the sectional at Rose Hulman Thursday.

TERRE HAUTE -- After playing them earlier in the year in invitationals, the Northview Knights faced the Greencastle Tiger Cubs in their first sectional match of the year. The Knights came away victorious, 4-1.

In the No. 1 singles match, Kaci Kehrt defeated Katherine Farris, 7-5 in a tiebreaker, 6-0.

"Kaci, our number one singles, took awhile to get into the match," Northview coach Laura McCrea said. "But once she did, she beat her girl 6-0 that second set."

The No. 2 singles was a deviation from the rest of the night. Greencastle's Harriet Watson won the match against the Knights' Miranda Brossman, 6-4, 6-3.

"Harriet is a sophomore," The Tiger Cubs' coach Sally Martin said. "She's very strong and very talented. She's learning how to control her game and how to read the court and be competitive. Harriet's got a good future if she continues to work at it. She's got a lot of potential."

Northview rebounded to take the number three singles match, pitting the Knights' Briana Cook against Greencastle's Haylie Romer. "Bri took control early and won 6-1, 6-3." McCrea said.

Martin had special comments about her departing seniors.

"My seniors I have, Nicole Boyle, Brooke Buckner and Katie Farris on the varsity and a girl named Katrina Woody on the JV," Martin said. "They've made it a wonderful year for everybody. It's been a great year and they've helped the team grow the past four years, so I give them a lot of credit."

Northview took both doubles matches on the evening. Greencastle's Nicole Boyle and Brooke Buckner played against Northview's Trisha Cox and Haley Leach. The Cox-Leach combo won, 6-4, 6-2.

"Our number one doubles played the best match I've seen them play all season," McCrea said. "I'm very proud of those girls."

Martin offered nothing but praise for Thursday night's victors.

"Northview's a very good team," Martin said. "I liked the match ups and being able to hit with a quality team that knows how to maneuver and move the ball. My girls are still growing. They still show growth."

Northview also won the No. 2 doubles, as Kylie Orr and Jenna Smith defeated Carlie Harlan and Kayla Chadd, 6-4, 6-3.

"Our number two doubles were solid again for us with a good strong win," McCrea said.

The Knights play today at 4 p.m. in the championship game against Owen Valley.
