City pool ushers in another summer of fun this Saturday

Thursday, May 26, 2011

Break out the sunscreen and try on the old swimsuit, it's time to get ready for the summer swim season.

The Greencastle Aquatic Center in Robe-Ann Park opens for the season this Saturday. Weather permitting, of course.

Pool manager William Dory is confident the season will open on schedule Saturday.

"As long as the water is warm enough and the air temperature is warm enough," Dory said Wednesday as he went over some final season-opening details.

Both water and air temperature need to be 70 degrees, he said. No problem with the air temperature, according to the forecast. And the pool water temperature "has been close to that (70) all week, so we should be fine," Dory said.

The pool opens daily at noon with open swim 12-5 p.m. and evening open swim 6:30-8 p.m.

In between, family swim and water babies learn-to-swim lessons are conducted 5-6:30 p.m.

Opening day will actually begin with adult lap swim and water walking at 11 a.m.

Daily admission rates for the 2011 season are unchanged from last season. Anyone age five and older will pay $3 to go to the pool, while youngsters four and under are admitted free.

Season passes are priced as follows: Individual season pass, $50; and family pass (4 people), $140 (with $20 added for each additional person).

A Greencastle Gate Pass, good for 10 admissions, is available for $25, which represents a savings of $5 per pass.

The pool also will be available for private pool rentals and birthday parties again this year. The cost of pool rental varies by the number of persons attending (1-75 people is $150; 76-150 is $220; 151 or more people is $300).

For birthday parties, the base rate (1-10 people) is $75 with $5 for each additional person.

Swimming lessons will also be available at the pool again this summer. The learn-to-swim program for youngsters age 7 and up is $30 for 10 half-hour lessons. Water babies, designed for preschoolers, also costs $30 for 10 half-hour sessions.

Season pass information and sign-up sheets for swim lessons and pool rentals are available at the front desk of the aquatic center, Dory noted.

While Dory is pool manager this summer, Annalise Small and Nicholas Stevens are assistant managers and Meagan Allen is the concession stand manager.
