The Greencastle Parks and Recreation Department recently announced a number of events for the summer of 2011.

Celebrate Kids Fishing Day: Grab your tackle box and favorite fishing rod and head to Jaycee park on Saturday for a fun-filled morning of fishing. Sponsored by Walmart, Carpenter Realtors, Friends of the Park, Sparks Commercial Tire, Greencastle Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts, this fishing derby will offer the Kids All-American Fishing Derby, Huck Finn costume contest, kids casting contests and more.

Registration is from 7:30-8 a.m. with contest from 8-11 a.m. Weigh-ins will be ongoing. The event is free.

"Flying High" disc golf tournament: On Saturday, June 11, Greencastle Parks and Recreation, along with Dick's Sporting Goods, will host a disc golf tournament at Big Walnut Sports Park's nine-hole disc golf course.

Tournament will run from 12:30-5 p.m., with a 1 p.m. shotgun start. Signup will be in the shelter house on the south side of the sports park.

Cost is $10. All proceeds will be used to complete some course improvements and purchase trees for holes 3, 4, 5 and 6. Prizes will be awarded per age group. This will be classified as an amateur level tournament. Pre-registration required for early tee off times.

Police boot camp: The Parks Department will team a number of law enforcement agencies to present police boot camp for youth entering grades 6-8.

Youth wanting to know what police training is like may join and learn physical fitness training, marching, team building and flag ceremonies. Participants will see a K-9 demonstration, a SWAT team demonstration and a rescue dive.

The program runs June 20-24 in the Greencastle Aquatics Center parking lot from 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m. each day.

Registration fee is $35 and is due Wednesday, June 15. Fee includes a T-shirt, hat, shorts, water bottle, snack and drinks.

There will be walking and running, so no flip-flops.

Tennis in the park: The Parks Department has reformatted the adult tennis program to follow the United State Tennis Associations' (USTA) "League Play in the Park" and "Start/Restart" programs.

In partnership with the USTA, this program will include an accelerated introductory instruction and lesson plan followed by a short season of league play with a progression into a season-end tournament. The program targets adults, 18 years and above.

Opening night will be the week of June 6 on the tennis courts in Robe-Ann Park. Dates and times will be set up after applications are received.

Fee is $40 per person and includes USTA membership, a T-shirt and a water bottle.

Registration deadline is Friday, June 3.

Greencastle Summer Running Club: Entering the fifth year in this partnership between DePauw University, Greencastle Community Schools, and the Greencastle Parks and Recreation Department, this unique opportunity is for runners of all ages. The Summer Running Club will provide the chance to meet and run with other local runners, consultation periods with running coaches, monitor personal progress, all in a great outdoor setting.

Coaches are Kori and Stacie Stoffregen and Pat and Cindy Babington.

Sessions are Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays beginning June 1 at 6 p.m. Club meets at the DePauw Nature Park.

Fee is $15 per person and includes a club T-shirt and water bottle.

My First Day Camp: Open your child's eyes to the wonderful world of their first day camp activities and the Greencastle Aquatics Center. Each day, the campers will meet in a large group, separate into two smaller groups for games, activities, and crafts and outdoor fun. They will close each day with a visit to the Greencastle Aquatic Center.

For youth ages 3-6 years accompanied by a parent. Pre-registration is required.

The camp will be from 8:30-11:30 a.m. July 20 and 22 at Robe-Ann Park. Cost is $34 per person.

  • So what is the date for the kid's fishing expedition? It takes up one 'full' and two quarter paragraphs but has the least actual detail.

  • miraclemom3: It says Saturday in the paragraph, and since it looks like most of the events are in occurring order, I am assuming that the fishing is This Saturday, June 4. ??? This is just my guess, I may be wrong. I hope this helps.

  • Thanks. I was assuming so, it just drives me nuts when the clarity of the B-G starts to look like it was handled at the Indy Star. One of my favorite things about our community is that our small town paper is more put-together and professional than most large market papers despite the smaller staff and budget.
