Music Fest to celebrate anniversaries for Dave's, Almost Home Saturday

Wednesday, August 17, 2011

Five musical acts, free cake, a cornhole tournament, raffles and a beer garden will help celebrate two business anniversaries and a birthday Saturday in Greencastle.

The north side of the Putnam County square will be the scene as Almost Home and Dave's Heating & Cooling invite the public to a day of celebration that begins at 3 p.m. and runs until 11 o'clock on the outdoor stage.

The event marks the 25th anniversary of Dave's Heating & Cooling, as well as business owner Dave Corbin's birthday, according to Almost Home/Swizzle Stick owner Gail Smith.

Last year's September event was a huge success in celebrating Almost Home's 20th anniversary, but Smith decided to hold this year's festival earlier to also coincide with both Dave's anniversary and move-in day for DePauw University students.

She said she expects "a couple thousand people" to take part in the festivities.

Bands performing on Saturday will be:

-- The Chiggers, a Steve Michael-led cover band, playing 3:30-5 p.m.

-- Phillip Steven and the Open Road Band, a country band that includes Greencastle's Steve St. Pierre, 5:30-7 p.m.

-- Ellusion, a Terre Haute-based rock group that has frequented the Swizzle Stick stage, 7:30-9 p.m.

-- The Tad Robinson Band, featuring the Greencastle bluesman of the same name, 9:30-11 p.m.

The venue will move inside the Swizzle Stick from 11 p.m. until 2 a.m. as Mac Daddys, an acoustic band from Terre Haute fronted by David Hunt, plays the finale.

While the music and anniversary/birthday cake will be free, other food and beverages will be available for purchase.

Smith said the menu for the day will have a distinct local flavor. It will include Bobby Zaring's sweet corn, Putnam County porkburgers, Almost Home's award-winning strawberry pizza and Italian beef.

In celebration of Dave's anniversary, raffle tickets will be available Saturday on prizes that include Indianapolis Colts gear, Tony Stewart merchandise, baseball tickets and other items.

Corbin is also organizing a cornhole tournament (call 653-7346 for more information). Entry fee is $10 per team with a chance to win $250 in prize money (or $100 for second place).

Proceeds from the raffles will go to the American Cancer Society, Smith said.

All ages are invited to attend. Admission is free.

The north side of the square will stay closed for the event with set-up commencing after the Farmers' Market ends. Almost Home has received a noise waiver from the city that allows outdoor music until 11 p.m.
