Betty H. Sendmeyer

Mrs. Betty H. Sendmeyer, 93, of Greencastle, passed away on Monday, Aug. 29, 2011 at the Asbury Towers Retirement Community.

Born June 12, 1918 in West Terre Haute to Richard and Harriet (Evans) Howells, she was a 1936 graduate of Indiana State Laboratory School and a 1940 graduate of Indiana State Teachers' College where she was a member of Gamma Phi Beta Sorority.

Betty taught Latin and home economics at Cory and Idaville High Schools before joining the Clay County Extension Service as a home demonstration agent in Brazil in 1943. She married Glendon Sendmeyer in 1946 and they moved to Greencastle in 1967. She then joined the Putnam County Extension Service, retiring in 1988. She was a member of the Gobin Memorial United Methodist Church; Merry Jills Extension Homemakers Club; Greencastle Woman's Club; Progress History Club and the Garden Club.

Survivors include her daughters, Suzanne Ackermann of White Bear Lake, Minn. and Sally Laan and husband, Remmert of Zionsville; three grandchildren, Andrew Ackermann and wife, Jill Humston of Waterloo, Iowa, Derek Laan of Yanji, South Korea and Christina Laan of West Lafayette; and a great grandson, Asher Ackermann.

She was preceded in death by her husband and parents.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 4, 2011 at the Gobin Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. P.T. Wilson officiating. Inurnment will be held at a later date at the Roselawn Cemetery in Terre Haute. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Bittles and Hurt Funeral Home have been entrusted with the arrangements.
