The Greencastle Middle School cross country teams open its season against Tuttle Thursday night.

The GMS girls open the meet by sweeping the first six places. What makes that even more impressive is the fact Greencastle had only six girls run on the night.

Hannah Brattain was first with a time of 12:55. Coach Art Dwigans said four of his runners were under the state qualifying time of 14:30. He also said he was encouraged to see new runner Katie Kessler come in under the state qualifying time.

For the boys, the saw five of its top seven runner move to high school this season, but Dwigans said the team has worked hard over the summer and it showed.

Logan Beck finished second with a time of 12:15 and was followed by Ben Gellman with a time of 12:33. In all, GMS took eight of the top 10 spots on the night.

As with the girls' team, four runners finished under the state qualifying time of 13:30. In addition to Gellman and Beck, Clayton Wilson and Peyton Jones finished under the time.

"It was a strong early showing by both of our teams and a great way to start the season," Dwigans said.
