Sheriff's Department

* Sept. 7, 4:18 p.m.: Randy E. Oliver, 49, Crawfordsville, was northbound on CR 325 West in a 1998 Ford F150. He tried to make the turn onto CR 500 North, but had to lock up his brakes due to his speed, causing the vehicle to slide through the intersection and off the road. The truck went down an embankment and hit a fence before stopping facing northeast.

A person at a nearby house reported the wreck and said the driver was walking away from the accident southbound on CR 325 West.

Capt. Tom Helmer had already been dispatched to VanBibber Lake Estates for two different reports of a reckless and possibly intoxicated driver in a red pickup truck. After receiving the dispatch about the accident, he found Oliver walking along 325 West.

Oliver told Helmer he was the driver of the truck and that he'd had a few drinks earlier in the day. Olver said he and his girlfriend had gotten in a fight, so he left her at VanBibber.

He failed three different field sobriety tests and then refused to give a good sample for the portable breath test. Helmer transported Oliver to the Putnam County Jail, where a certified test was administered. He tested at a .17 BAc.

Oliver was booked into the jail for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated and public intoxication.
