Fun time's over

Wednesday, September 21, 2011
The old climbing structure, locally known as "The Cowboy and The Chinaman," in Robe-Ann Park is taken down Tuesday as David Wells (left) and Chris Sage dig around the base of the equipment. The play structure, located near shelterhouse No. 2, was no longer considered safe under current safety standards, Park Maintenance Director Ed Neumann said. He noted that with the monkey bars portion removed from between the characters, the two figures possibly will be moved elsewhere in the park and repositioned as a sculpture.

  • and so it goes. Thousands of kids have played on this for how many years and now suddenly it isn't safe.

  • Yeah that's not near as safe as the cement pit known as the skate park, that has sent dozens to the emergency room with broken bones, a skull fracture and who knows how many scraps and bruises. Sheesh what a city. Hate to see the old cowboy go!

  • I remember when some of these climbing toys were on the east end of the IBM building next to the shelter house. I had alot of fun on them when I was a kid.

  • Yes, I'm sure moving them and re-classifying them as "sculptures" will surely keep kids from climbing on them. Ha! I wonder how large the "committee" was that made this brilliant decision. Helmets and elbow pads for the swingset coming up!

  • Meth isn't "safe" let's see you remove that from the skate park.

  • Well they were brought by the park to OmniSource recycle yard for scrap. Luckily I also have great memories of playing on them as well. I work at the recycle yard, pulled some strings and saved them from destruction. Now they will be donated to the Putnam county museum for display.
