Greencastle girls soccer team records first shut out of 2011 season
Soccer is all about goals. The ones you score on the field and the goals you set and achieve. The Greencastle girls soccer team achieved both Monday night at Dee Monnett field with their 1-0 win over the Monrovia Bulldogs.
After watching the rain all day and wondering whether they would get to play, the Greencastle girls came out strong and hard from the first whistle.
Greencastle had the kick-off and soon were on their way towards the goal. With less than four minutes completed in the first half, GHS found themselves on the board as Rosio Gomez took a shot from behind the 18. Gomez' shot had enough power to sail above the Bulldogs goalie's head and directly into the top corner of the goal.
As GHS cheered and reset to receive the ball, Monrovia caught them off guard. As Monrovia kicked off GHS seemed a little behind allowing the ball and most of the Monrovia girls to end up deep in GHS territory. Greencastle stepped up their defense and began playing as one team. Classic soccer skills of triangles, passes and team play could be seen from the sidelines.
Even in wet and slick conditions GHS was able to get off numerous shots. The GHS defense also saw their fair share of action as Monrovia managed to make it down to Greencastle's side of the field quite a few times. With all the action, GHS was able to keep the lead going into half-time.
"I'm not sure if they were excited to play in the rain and mud or if they were just excited to play," said GHS girls head coach, Maurice McKee. "The girls I saw tonight definitely came to play soccer."
Greencastle started the second half a little slow to the ball. As substitutions were made the GHS midfield began moving the ball quickly out of GHS territory and into scoring positions. GHS midfielders, Sarah Beams, Abby Manion, Mary Parker and Mackenzie Meyer were all over the ball during the second half. They were constantly going to air balls, fighting for loose balls and taking control of the game.
It was a team effort for GHS as the offense mounted a great charge against the Bulldogs with at least seven different girls shooting on the goal. Greencastle's defense, led by Kenzie Kean, continually covered for each other and pushed the ball back up the field helping GHS goalie, Sydney Secrest keep the ball out of the net.
Secrest achieved one of her goals Monday night, a shut-out. With over 12 saves Secrest was able to keep the Bulldogs from scoring and earn her first shut out of the season. GHS scored and achieved both goals with their 1-0 win over Monrovia.
The Greencastle Girls will be in action again at home Thursday night against the Edgewood Mustangs starting at 5:30 p.m.
