Rep. Jim Baird encourages Cloverdale high school students to pursue higher education

CLOVERDALE -- District 44 State Rep. Jim Baird (R- Greencastle) addressed Cloverdale High School students Monday, encouraging Hoosier pupils to pursue higher education options and plan for college completion.

The event at Cloverdale High School was part of the launch of the College GO! Week, an initiative launched at elementary, high schools and colleges statewide Sept. 26 -30.

The College GO! Week campaign is one of three campaigns sponsored by Learn More Indiana, a partnership of the Indiana Commission for Higher Education, Department of Education, Department of Workforce Development and the State Student Assistance Commission of Indiana.

"The College GO! Week campaign reminds students to take important educational steps of making a graduation plan for high school, deciding what to do after high school and applying for colleges or other quality workforce programs," Rep. Baird said. "The important steps of furthering one's education will make today's students successful in tomorrow's workforce."

According to the Indiana Commission for Higher Education, nearly two-thirds of jobs will require a college degree or a recognized workforce credential by 2018. Various university representatives will visit Cloverdale High School to reinforce College GO! Week's message to plan for college completion and focus on how to attain career success.

Rep. Baird and the Indiana General Assembly endorsed legislation in the 2011 legislative session supporting various aspects of scholarships for students seeking higher education and strengthening the current 21st Century Scholars Program to ensure the program will remain a viable option for students seeking higher education.

"Education goes hand in hand with career success," Rep. Baird said. "I encourage all students to participate in College GO! Week and explore the possibilities of higher education."

State Rep. Baird serves District 44, which includes all of Putnam County and parts of Clay, Parke and Vigo counties.
