Greencastle ends regular season with a loss to the Cadets

CLAYTON -- The Cascade Cadets girls soccer team showed up to their senior night ready to play, and that they did as they beat Greencastle 9-0 in the last regular season game.

Greencastle arrived at Cascade last night and once again was met with rain showers. The girls got only a few minutes into the first half when the rain came on strong and so did the Cadet offense. Cascade put three goals into the GHS net within the first ten minutes of the game.

From then on it seemed Greencastle was always trying to play catch up. Cascade came to play with a fast-paced aggressive game that was able to work right around Greencastle.

The Cubs quickly moved into a defensive mode as they tried everything thing they could to keep the Cadets out of the goal. Unfortunately, Cascade scored another goal ending the first half with a 4--0 lead over Greencastle.

The rain continued through the game but began to lighten up a bit during the second half. Everyone was wet, cold and playing in less than stellar conditions.

The field became very fast and slick causing both teams to concentrate on accurate passes. Greencastle tried to rally back and forced the ball towards Cascade's goal.

However, they never managed to find the net. It was the Cadets who always seemed to be first to the ball. They constantly ran through the pass carrying the ball with them down the field, which made it easier to move past the Greencastle defense and score five more times before the end of the game.

"You always hate to lose games, especially the last game of the season," Head Coach Maurice McKee commented. "But now we wipe the slate clean and start out with a 0-0 record just like everyone else. It's time for us to focus on sectionals."

The best play of the night came after GHS goalie Sydney Secrest moved out of the goal to make a save. The ball deflected off her body and headed straight for the goal but it wasn't going in this time as GHS defender Kenzie Kean was in position to block the shot. The ball bounced off Kean and back out into play giving Secrest time to jump back up and return to position before Cascade could score.

"We've worked hard on our defense this season. In order for Sydney to be aggressive she has to have a good defense to cover for her. We constantly work on covering for each other to keep the ball out of the goal," Coach McKee noted. "It was great to see it finally work out tonight."

Greencastle plays against Southmont in the first game of Sectional play on Monday at 6 p.m.
