GFD sets open house Oct. 13 for Fire Prevention Month

Saturday, October 1, 2011

The Greencastle Fire Department will conduct its 11th annual open house 4-7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13 at the firehouse.

The event is scheduled each year during Fire Prevention Month and will include several activities for both children and adults.

Open house activities include a tour of the firehouse and prize giveaways for the coloring, poster, essay and art contests for ages pre-kindergarten to grade 12.

The fire department is located at 107 S. Indiana St.

Participants will also be able to experience the Smoke House and visit with Patches the Robot, as well as enjoy the free food and drink.

"It's an opportunity for the community to come into the fire station and just learn about fire prevention and about the fire department in general," GFD Fire Chief Bill Newgent said.

The goal of the open house is to reach out to the community to educate residents on fire safety.

The fire department will be visiting schools during that week, teaching students about fire prevention. Fire officials will also be visiting preschools and home-schooled children during the month as well.

GFD will also be teaching the community about the importance of smoke detectors. The department will also provide those without one in their home with free smoke detectors and answer fire prevention-related questions.

"It's good opportunity for the community to come and learn about the men and women that serve them every day," Newgent said.

For more information, persons may contact the department at 653-3108.
