'Shinpig' event Saturday to fete local police, fire, EMS workers
For the fourth straight year, Putnam County police officers, firefighters and emergency service workers will be honored Saturday, Oct. 8 at an appreciation hog roast known locally as "Shinpig."
Organizer Bob Campbell, a Greencastle firefighter who puts on the event each year with Greencastle Police Officer Ed Wilson, said the name comes from combining shindig with pig, as in hog roast.
"It's just a good, fun event to say 'Thanks for what you do' and 'Here's to another safe year,'" Campbell explained.
The hog roast is free and open to all police, fire and EMS representatives.
It begins at noon at Fenwick Park, the picnic area on the south side of the Putnam County Jail.
Plans include a disc jockey and a cornhole tournament that begins at 2 p.m. There is a $20 entry free for the cornhole event with all proceeds going to Good Times Inc., a fund Campbell and Wilson have established to assist police, fire and EMS in times of crisis.
"We want to help out our own," Campbell said, indicating the funds can be used for a variety of things, such as expenses for parents when a child in the hospital or in case a fire uproots a family from its home.
