Covington bank robbery suspect arrested

DANVILLE, Ill. -- Working together, law enforcement officials from two states and the FBI have arrested the suspect they believe responsible for two bank robberies and one attempted bank robbery in Indiana and Illinois.

The arrest was the result of Illinois law enforcement and bank employees identifying the suspect through bank surveillance photos.

David J. Rangel Jr., 22, Danville, Ill., was taken into custody around 9:45 p.m. Friday in Danville, Ill., after a short foot pursuit.

Rangel was preliminarily charged with felony robbery of a financial institution in Illinois and incarcerated with no bond in the Vermilion County (Ill.) Jail.

That charge stems from the Oct. 12 robbery of a bank in Casey, Ill. Indiana robbery charges are being sought by Indiana State Police Det. Jim Cody for the robbery of the Main Source Bank in Covington (Fountain County).

At the time of his arrest, officers located items believed to be related to the bank crimes, including U.S. currency.

A related search warrant was served at the Danville, Ill., home of Rangel's mother, also the home of the suspect. The vehicle allegedly used in the crimes was also recovered.

No other information about the search warrant or vehicle will be released, officials said.

During his arrest, Rangel sustained minor injuries from a police service dog and was treated and released from a Danville hospital.

"This arrest was the direct result of great police cooperation, attentive witnesses, and good bank surveillance photos," ISP Det. Cody said. "Solving these crimes was not only a success for law enforcement, but a success for the banking institutions as well."

Law enforcement officers involved in the arrest were representative of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Indiana State Police, Illinois State Police, Crawfordsville Police, Danville (lll.) Police and Vermilion County Illinois Sheriff's Office.
