North Putnam exits sectional with loss to Chargers

LEBANON -- The North Putnam volleyball team bowed out of the 2011 sectional with a loss to North Montgomery Thursday. The Cougars lost 25-19, 25-19, 23-25 and 25-16.

"Going in to the game the girls were very nervous," head coach Jill Schreiber said. "We had moved to 3A and that played a big part in our confidence level. We knew we would have to bring our A game tonight. This was a team I thought could handle this move, the talent is there and we could be competitive.

"Nerves took over the first couple points of the first game, but once we began doing what we knew we had to do, our nerves settled down a bit," she added.

Morgan Robinson had six kills and seven blocks for North Putnam, while Samantha Lucas had two kills and three blocks. Katie Welch had 14 assists, with Kelsey Reed adding six assists. LeeAnn Davis had 15 digs, Kensy Asbell had one kill.

Bethany Wiatt had six digs and six serving points, with Karlie Gray and Tari Straziscar adding four digs each. Madi Asbell chipped in two kills, with Kallie Brattain two digs and five kills and Alyssa Roberts one digs and two kills.

Schreiber said the team looked and played hesitant in the contest.

"We knew where we needed to put the ball, but just couldn't get it to work for us until the third game," Schreiber said. "We finally figured out where their weak points were and we played them well.

"The girls played well being the first year in a 3A sectional. There were a lot of people in the stands and the gym was not a familiar one for us. But overall I was proud of the girls for overcoming their nervousness and playing together," she continued.

"Although it was a loss, it was a loss we can be proud of, we did not let them walk away with an easy win. North Montgomery had to work for their points and the match," Schreiber added.
