DePauw Band collects food for concert admission Sunday

The DePauw University Band, Dr. Craig Paré, conductor, will present a concert at 3 p.m. Sunday in Kresge Auditorium of the Performing Arts Center.

The concert performance is free of charge and open to the public.

It is requested that, if possible, those attending bring one non-perishable food item for admission.

All donations will go directly to the Putnam County Emergency Food Pantry. Requested food items include canned chicken noodle soup, canned fruits, rice and pork and beans. Monetary donations will also be accepted.

"As we try to do for most of our performances, the University Band will present an array of types and styles of music for this concert," Paré said. "Our works include the beautiful, rich setting of 'Lux Aurumque' by Eric Whitacre, which was originally a choral work, arranged by the composer for winds, and 'More Cowbell' by Scott McAllister is one movement of a three-movement piece, 'Popcopy.'"

McAllister's inspiration is taken from a "Saturday Night Live" skit featuring Will Ferrell as a fictional cowbell player for the rock group Blue Oyster Cult. Ferrell's character, Gene Frenkle, fervently plays cowbell on a recording track, annoying the band members but prompting the producer, (actor Christopher Walken) to declare: "I've got a fever, and the only prescription ... is more cowbell!"

The concert will end with a 19th-century band work, "Yankee Doodle Fantasie Humoreske," where University Band members are featured as section soloists in virtuosic variations on the Revolutionary War tune.

The University Band will also present two works ("Miniature Set for Band" and "Marchisma") by past School of Music director and faculty member Donald H. White in celebration of the composer's 90th birthday.

"Donald White was an integral part of the School of Music from 1947-1978, as a professor of composition and music theory," Paré said. "He also served as director of the School of Music from 1974-1978. It is a pleasure to honor him as a distinguished composer and friend of the School of Music."

In addition to the University Band, three student chamber ensembles will also perform: The Flute Choir, coached by Prof. Anne Reynolds and conducted by principal flutist Megan Benedict, presenting "Di Rayze Nokh Amerike" (The Trip to America); a clarinet quartet (Courtney Cosby, Karah Crockett, Daniel Hickey and Sijia Luo), coached by Prof. Randy Salman, performing "Nocturne for Clarinet Quartet" by William Presser; and a saxophone quartet (Rachel Jewell, Stephen Lucaites, Andrew Muth and Kevin Smith), coached by Prof. Scotty Stepp, performing "Sevilla" by Isaac Albéniz.
