Eagles stumble against Cascade, fall 66-28
CLAYTON -- The South Putnam Eagles may have a ceremonial burning of the tape of Friday night's girls basketball game at Cascade High School.
Coach Lindsey Blackman really doesn't want to see it again, much less show the Eagles the Cascade Cadets' 66-28 West Central Conference victory.
Going into the opening conference game, this was 6-1 South Putnam vs. 5-2 Cascade. The Eagles were averaging 51.3 points per game and shored 64 in their last win.
But an old cliché is most accurate: South Putnam couldn't throw it in the ocean. The Eagles hit just 8-of-59 shots (13 percent), compared to the Cadets' 25-34 (46 percent) shooting.
"We scored 27 points in the first quarter on Tuesday (against South Vermillion) and we didn't hit 27 points until the fourth quarter today. Unfortunately the cold bug hit everyone at the same time. It seemed like no one could hit anything," Blackman said.
Cascade jumped to a 17-9 lead in the opening quarter and expanded the margin to 35-14 in the second period. South Putnam was 4-26 shooting from the floor in the first half, compared to Cascade's 13-28.
Cascade scored 14 points of the third quarter. Open shots the Eagles usually hit, rolled off the rim.
At one point a frustrated Emily Dabkowski just looked at her coach with open arms, like, 'What should I do?"
"I didn't have an answer for her," Blackman said.
"We talk about when the outside shot is not hitting, to go inside and they were trying. They would shot fake and try to get close to the basket and those weren't falling. So they did everything we asked as far as trying to get that lid off the basket, it just wasn't working for us," Blackman said.
That may have been the height of South Putnam's frustration. In the third period center Leanna Masters got the ball inside and shot, rebounded the miss, shot again and rebounded again, shot again and again it fell off and the whistle blew. Masters was called for an offensive foul. It was a bad night.
Jenny Thompson led South Putnam with eight points.
Cascade had five players in double figures, led by Brandyce Sallee with 17 points and Sydney Stein with 15.
South Putnam (6-2, 0-1 in WCC) returns to action Tuesday night at Owen Valley.
