Central first-graders collect stuffed animals for troopers to provide kids in distress

PUTNAMVILLE -- The Indiana State Police Post at Putnamville have received a donation in the spirit of Christmas.

To assist other children during emotionally distressing times, first-graders at South Putnam Central Elementary donated 46 new stuffed animals and bears to the local post.

The intention of the gifts is for troopers to carry the animals in their patrol cars and provide them to children who are distraught after an event such as a car crash or crime.

In the spirit of Christmas and with the intention of learning it is better to give than receive, children in the first-grade classes of teachers Kelly Newby and Tish Paugh decided to collect new stuffed animals and provide them to troopers instead of having a gift exchange for themselves.

Wednesday afternoon, Indiana State Police Sgt. Joe Watts and Senior Trooper Jason Schoffstall attended the class Christmas party and spoke to the children about various safety topics.

The troopers concluded their visit by expressing to the children how thoughtful and beneficial their idea to help will be for others. At the conclusion, the children presented the stuffed animals to the officers.

"Our kids are very excited and proud to help other children in their time of need. This is our 11th year of providing the animals to our local troopers for the benefit of others," teacher Kelly Newby said.

The Putnamville District serves Putnam, Clay, Parke, Sullivan, Vermillion and Vigo counties.

The animals will be dispersed to troopers patrolling all six counties and will benefit many children in times of tragedy.
