GHS alumni to offer scholarships

Wednesday, January 4, 2012

The Greencastle High School alumni scholarships are once again being offered this year.

Applications are available from the Greencastle High School guidance counsler, the Putnam County Community Foundation or online at www.greencastlealumni.com.

The GHS Alumni Scholarship Fund has awarded 91 scholarships to GHS graduates since its inception in 1995. The fund is housed in the Putnam County Foundation and only the interest is used for scholarships, so the fund will continue into perpetuity.

A $50 donation to the scholarship fund provides a free year's membership to the Alumni Association, and the contribution can be made in memory of, or in honor of, anyone you choose.

Applications are considered from any GHS graduate who attended Greencastle High School for at least two years and is enrolled in an accredited college or other approved institution. Equal weight is given to the applicant's scholarship, citizenship and need.

The application is written by the Greencastle Alumni Board, and the selection committee is from the board as well.

The Putnam County Foundation must approve the board's selection, but all other aspects of the scholarship are independent of the Foundation.

Applicants may apply for the scholarship regardless of the year they graduated. The due date for applications this year is March 15. Any applications received at the Community Foundation after this date will not be considered.

Recipients are eligible to apply or re-apply for this scholarship during their undergraduate college term. Therefore, some recipients have received the GHS Alumni Scholarship more than one year. At least two scholarships are given to graduating seniors each year.

The Greencastle Alumni Association also sponsors an all-class reunion every year. With this reunion, classmates get a chance to see and visit with alums of other classes. While some classes don't have reunions, this allows classmates of those classes to get together. The next all-school class reunion will be July 14 at the Dixie Chopper Conference and Convention Center at the Greencastle Airport.

There will also be a spaghetti dinner fund-raiser once again at the GHS cafeteria, April 25.

Anyone interested in being a sponsor of the Greencastle Alumni Association may use the contact us section of the website or call Steve McMains at 655-1733.
