Former Martinsville City Attorney Rod Bray announced Thursday he is seeking the Republican nomination for the State Senate District 37 seat currently held by his father, Sen. Richard Bray (R-Martinsville).

Sen. Bray announced Tuesday he will retire when his current term expires this November.

"My family has a long tradition of public service," Rod Bray said. "My grandfather served in the U.S. Army during World War II and in the U.S. Congress, and my father has served in the Indiana House of Representatives and the Indiana Senate.

"Public service is something I feel very passionate about," he added, "and I feel it's my time to contribute and give back to the great state I call home."

Bray, an attorney in private practice with significant experience in municipal law, said the key issues he is focused on are jobs, the economy and education.

"Our district has the infrastructure necessary to attract new business and industry and create more good-paying jobs for hard-working Hoosiers," Bray said. "Indiana has made significant progress but I believe there is much more we can do to bring new jobs to our district and the state -- and improve the quality of life for all Hoosiers."

Bray received his BA in history from Indiana University and his JD from Valparaiso University School of Law.

He and his wife Kelly have two sons. They reside in Martinsville.

District 37 is composed of Morgan County and portions of Johnson, Owen and Putnam (Warren, Washington, Jefferson and Cloverdale townships and six precincts in Greencastle Township).
