Tiger Cubs blast Cadets on the road

Once again riding a stingy defense and the hot shooting of Holden King, the Greencastle Tiger Cub junior varsity basketball team defeated Cascade 57-27 at Cascade Thursday night.

Trailing 4-2 early in the contest, the young Tiger Cubs went on a 14 point run to take a 16-4 lead late in the first quarter. A hawking full-court press led to many Cadet turnovers and Greencastle lead 21-7 at the end of the fist quarter and never let up. A total of nine Tiger Cubs saw action in the first quarter which saw King score six points and Tanner Nicholson score seven.

Keeping the pressure on, Greencastle outscored the Cadets 13-5 in the second to take a commanding 34-12 lead into the locker room at the half. All players for Greencastle saw action in the first half and nine made it into the scoring column.

"As I have stated earlier, this team relies on quickness, determination, and transition baskets to be successful," GHS head coach Doug Hudson said. "Tonight we were great defensively and were even able to run a lot of set plays, different defenses, and a delay game that we just put in this week.

"Overall, this was probably our best game of the season. As most people know, we are playing a lot of Freshmen and they are finally starting to understand what we as a staff expect. If we continue to grow, by the end of the season we are going to be very good," he added

Hudson also praised a couple of players that were defensive catalysts.

"I want to commend both Lane Winslow and Collin Foxx," Hudson said. "Both of these young men are great defensively and tonight the energy they brought off of the bench was huge. Many times players want to start and don't understand when they don't, but as a coach you have to figure out what works best for the team.

"Both Collin and Lane are good enough to start, but as I specifically told Lane after the game, the energy he brings allows us to take the game to another level. Collin is quick and never quits defensively. I could go down the line and talk about everyone in this win tonight, but I thought both Lane and Collin were huge," he said

The highlight of the night also went to Foxx. With time winding down at the end of the third quarter, he took the ball from the opposite baseline, dribbled to half-court and launched a shot as time expired which banked in and brought the crowd to it's feet. Holden King led all scorers with 15 and Tanner Nicholson added seven. Hunter Drury had 10 for Cascade.

With the win, the young Tiger Cubs, winners of three straight, reach the .500 mark at 5-5. They are also undefeated in the WCC.

"We are happy, but a long way from satisfied," said Hudson. "We still want to go undefeated in the county, conference, and win the county tournament."

Greencastle is off until next Thursday when they travel to North Putnam for another WCC and county clash. The game will follow the girls game which begins at 6 p.m.
