Current Morgan County Councilman Ryan Goodwin filed Thursday morning to seek the Republican nomination for the Indiana State Senate District 37.

The seat has become open due to the retirement announcement of long-serving Sen. Richard Bray (R-Martinsville).

District 37 includes all of Morgan County and portions of Johnson, Owen and Putnam County (Washington, Warren, Jefferson, Cloverdale and Greencastle (six precincts) townships.

Goodwin is a commercial insurance agent for Morgan Insurance Group, based in Martinsville. Goodwin is also a past member of the Mooresville Town Council and past president of the Mooresville Chamber of Commerce. Prior to his business career, Goodwin served as a police officer for the Town of Mooresville.

"I bring a conservative, pro-business, pro-public safety record to this race," Ryan Goodwin said. "I have real-life experiences in business, public safety and local office that will beneficial to this position."

Goodwin is also passionate about education, a topic close to him as his wife is a mathematics teacher at the Mooresville High School.

"Teachers have an unbelievably difficult job," Goodwin said, "and legislators must work with teachers to provide them the tools they need to succeed, while working toward improvements."

In addition to education, Goodwin is focused on the economy and continuing the record of fiscal responsibility in Indiana.

"Indiana is so far ahead of many other states, because we have lived within our means, just like we must do in our own households" he said. "Indiana must continue to find ways to act in a conservative manner, always spending no more than we take in."

When it comes to creating new jobs in the district, Goodwin does not believe the government actually creates jobs -- they facilitate job creation.

"Ultimately, the state needs to get out of the way of local officials and private businesses, so they can do what they do best," Goodwin said. "If we learn to do that, I think we'd be surprised at the economic improvement that would result."

Public service is clearly a passion for Goodwin.

"I can think of no higher honor than serving my community and district in this capacity," added Goodwin. "We have the greatest state in the nation, and I look forward to making it an ever better state, not for me, but for my children -- and someday -- their children."

Goodwin, his wife Daphne and son, reside in Mooresville.
