Herschel 'Buck' Jones Jr.

Herschel "Buck" Jones Jr., 81, Sargent, Texas, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012 with his family at his side.

Buck was born in Indiana on June 24, 1930 to Herschel and Lima Jones.

He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Buck then went on to work in the construction industry.

He was a Sargent resident for 30 years and dedicated more than 25 years of service to VFW Post 2412 in Sargent and to Sweeny, Texas, Post 8551. Buck is fondly remembered as a favorite bingo caller and Post Commander at Post 2412.

He lived life to its fullest and battled many illnesses in the last years of his life with his spirit of determination, humor, dignity and no regrets.

Buck is survived by his wife of 40 years, Betty Jones; son Herschel Gene Jones III; daughters Roxanne Vermillion and Vickie Walden; sisters Virginia, Barbara and Donna; stepchildren Stanley and Allen Buccanan and David, Brian and Gail Day; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Herschel and Lima, and four sisters, Rosemary, Gail, Susie and Marilyn.

A memorial service to celebrate his life was held Feb. 6 at VFW Post 8551 in Sweeny.

Buck's big smile will be missed by his many friends. Their thoughts and prayers are with his family.
