Cloverdale deputy OK after crash

CLOVERDALE -- A Thursday crash heavily damaged a Cloverdale Police car but left the deputy inside unharmed.

At 10:01 p.m., Deputy Town Marshal Tyler Turner, 28, was assisting Indiana State Police in attempting to catch a fleeing vehicle when the wreck occurred.

Turner was following the state-led pursuit northbound on Meridian Line Road in the 2007 Dodge Charger when he came to a curve in the road and lost control of the car. The vehicle left the road and hit a tree.

"It was due to the road conditions," explained Cloverdale Town Marshal John Chadd. "He's OK, the car did what it was supposed to do and all the airbags deployed."

Turner was uninjured in the crash and the suspect was apprehended.

Damage was estimated at $10,001-$25,000.

  • For the safety of all involved, hopefully the department will review its pursuit policy. Apprehending a suspect isn't worth the life of an officer or a bystander.

  • Perhaps more than just one person is "working with a purpose"...it doesn't say, but maybe that suspect committed a violent crime and was dangerous or was a known offender, just something to think about before people start taking jabs at someone. Read it again, it says nothing about vehicle speeds it says only poor road conditions. Why do people always bash our officers, would be nice to see the majority of the comments say what the first one does.

  • My statement was meant in a general sense; this specific incident is just the current news that is being commented on at the moment. High speed pursuits hurt and kill people, sometimes innocent people, sometimes officers. A trained police officer, driving at the posted speed limit, who is familiar with the area, should not leave the roadway and crash into a tree. Speed was a factor. I'm not blaming the officer; I'm blaming the system which encourages officers to pursue suspects with reduced regard to safety.

  • Without attacking individual department practices, I agree with Clovertucky about a review of procedures. Too many time the action of the different departments make very little sense when compared to what they are trying to accomplish. Multiple police cars in a chase make no sense to me. Breaking into a bathroom to protect someone with a knife - and then shooting them requires the question of why? I have regularly seen police racing down water works hill at 70-80 mph with no final report as to why. Makes me wonder what the point is.

  • Clovertucky, "reduced regards to safety"?? Do you think it would be safe to let the guy go that was causing the pursuit in the first place? Officers put themselves on the line to keep the public safe every day and this one could have very easily lost his life just because he was doing his job, keeping you all safe...

  • If the criminals know that the police won't pursue them, they will have no reason not to run. Crime rates will skyrocket, and the same ones criticizing pursuing officers will be screaming for them to do something about the high crime rate.

  • For everyone complaining about the police. Next time you need help, call someone else. These people risk their lives every single day! For what, FOR YOU! Yet people on this website have the audacity to complain about them. It makes me sick to my stomach.

    As for the idiot questioning why there are more than two cars in a chase or why they had to shoot someone. Are you in their shoes? Probably not. That was a last resort way to stop him, and yes I know what you're talking about. I live just down the road from where that happened.

    When you get attacked by someone, or robbed, call a crackhead instead. But of course, you'll call the police for help. They will be there to help too.

    You people disgust me.
