Mustangs race past Wildcats to advance

Wednesday, February 29, 2012

At the Class 3A No. 28 Greencastle Sectional, Edgewood started strong against South Vermillion and never looked back en route to a convincing 58-35 victory.

The Mustangs built a 14-8 lead after one quarter and extended it to 30-17 at the break behind an 11 points first half performance by Trevor Selburg.

South Vermillion struggles began early and plagued the Wildcats for the entire contest. After taking a lead early, South Vermillion offense became stagnant and couldn't keep up with the quicker Edgewood squad.

In the second half, the Mustangs continued to roll, outscoring South Vermillion 28-18 in the half to come away with their 23-point win.

Edgewood's James Ridge scored a game-high 26 points, amassing 22 points in the second half alone. Selburg and Cameron Walls joined him in double figures with 13 and 11, respectively. Brandon Owens chipped in seven and Derek Driver had one point.

For South Vermillion, Josh Vaughan led the way with 10 points, followed by Jordan Branz with eight and Phillip Harpenau with seven. Kam Weyrauch and Cole Morgan scored two points each and Kole Sanders contributed one point.

Edgewood will face West Vigo in Friday night's sectional semifinal at 6 p.m.
