Wainman tabbed as Player of the Year

GHS senior and defensive specialist Hannah Wainman was named the 2012 Player of the Year.

Most of the time it's offensive stats that push a player over the top when it comes down to earning honors. But in the case of the 2012 Putnam County Player of the Year it's defense that made the difference.

In a very tight race, Greencastle senior Hannah Wainman has been selected as the 2012 Banner Graphic Player of the Year. In addition to Wainman's 11 points and 7.5 rebounds per game, she set a school record with 100 steals in a season. She also led the team with 72 offensive rebounds and led the county with 18 blocks. She was second in assists with 42.

Wainman is joined on the All-County team by teammates Taylor Pruitt and Alex Basile, South Putnam's Jenny Thompson, Emily Dabkowski and Leanna Masters, North Putnam's LeeAnn Davis and Kensy Asbell and Cloverdale's Sydney Shrum and Paige Gruener.

Pruitt led the county in scoring with an average of 13.6 and in rebounds with a total of 196. She was second on her team with five blocks and third with 19 assists. Defensively she had 56 steals. Point guard Basile was second on the team with 38 assists, with 40 steals and two blocks. She averaged five points per contest and snagged 95 rebounds on the season.

The South Putnam trio of Dabkowski, Thompson and Masters led a turnaround for the Eagles that found them playing for a sectional title this season. They rocketed South Putnam to a county-best 15 wins and a second-place finish in the conference with a record of 4-1.

Thompson led the Eagles with an 11-point average per game and connected on a team-best 46 three-pointers. She also hauled down 92 rebounds, dished out 29 assists and swiped 33 steals. Masters was tops on the team with 146 rebounds, including 87 offensive boards. She averaged 10.4 points per game and had a team-high 10 blocks.

Dabkowski ran the point for the Eagles and led the county in assists with 53. When she wasn't setting up her teammates, Dabkowski averaged nine points per game and was second on the team with 123 rebounds. She also added six blocked shots.

North Putnam guard Asbell led her team with 7.4 points per game and third on the team with 66 rebounds, including 30 offensive boards. She also had 21 steals, 12 assists and three blocks. Davis was second in scoring for the Cougars with seven points per game. She was second on the team in rebounding with 101 and first with 54 offensive boards. She led the team with 40 steals and added 33 assists.

Cloverdale's Shrum was the county's leading rebounder this season with 203. She was second in scoring for Cloverdale with an average of 7.5 points. She also added 28 steals and seven assists. Teammate Gruener led the Clovers with 7.9 points per game average and was second on the team in rebounding with 72. She led Cloverdale with 43 assists and was second in the county in steals with 71.

This year's class breakdown for the 2012 All-County team is five seniors, four juniors and one sophomore.
