A new shepherd will be guiding the flock at Greencastle High School.

The Greencastle School Board voted unanimously Tuesday night to accept Superintendent Lori Richmond's recommendation that Jennifer Shepherd become the new Greencastle High School principal in the 2012-2013 school year.

Shepherd has spent the last 10 years as an assistant principal at Warsaw Community High School. Prior to that, she was an assistant principal at Rochester High School for two years.

Before becoming an administrator, Shepherd was a drama teacher at Warsaw High School.

The new principal was in attendance for the Tuesday meeting, having toured the high school during the day.

"I loved the building. I loved the school spirit I saw exhibited on the walls," said Shepherd, who also showed some spirit clad in purple and gray.

"I thought the building was clean and well kept. That's the first impression anyone is going to get when they walk in the school."

She said she was also impressed with the GHS staff members, having met with the majority of them after school.

"I got a chance to talk with each one of them," Shepherd said. "They were curious and that made it fun. It was nice to see it was important enough to them to come down and meet me."

Shepherd will officially assume her new duties on July 1.

Among the seven other personnel items approved Tuesday were three teacher retirements and one teacher resignation.

Middle school art teacher Margaret Huggard, middle school math teacher Jeff Miller and high school Spanish teacher Pat Gottschalk will all step away from the chalkboard at year's end.

"All three of them have come to me at different times and they're excited about the next chapter in their lives," Richmond said.

High school social studies teacher and boys' cross country coach Craig Callahan resigned, as he is moving to Minnesota.

The three remaining personnel items were the approval of Kayla Birt, Nicole Boyle and Brooke Buckner as volunteer lay coaches for GHS girls' tennis.

A complete profile of Jennifer Shepherd will be published in an upcoming edition of the Banner Graphic.
