Greencastle teen seriously injured in Madison Twp. wreck

Monday, April 16, 2012

A South Putnam junior was airlifted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis after the truck he was driving struck a tree Sunday evening.

At approximately 9 p.m. Logan R. Pell, 17, Greencastle, was southbound on County Road 525 West in Madison Township, approaching County Road 50 North.

Pell apparently lost control of the 2005 Dodge Ram 2500 while negotiating a curve in the road.

Sgt. Craig Sibbitt of the Putnam County Sheriff's Department said it appeared Pell applied the brakes on loose gravel and lost traction. The truck then left the road on the east side and hit a tree.

The impact was in the driver's side door area, which pinned Pell in the vehicle. Madison Township and Greencastle fire departments were dispatched to the scene, to extricate the young man from the vehicle.

Pell was then airlifted to Methodist. Sibbitt's accident report listed his most severe injuries as to his knee, lower leg and foot area.

Indiana University Health Public Relations told the Banner Graphic that Pell had surgery Monday morning and as of 5 p.m. Monday, he was listed in serious condition, according to a hospital spokesman.

A student-involved accident has been a delicate situation for schools to handle in the past, with counselors having to inform students of an injury to their classmates. However, South Putnam Counselor Mark Wildman said no such discussions were necessary Monday.

In the social media era, students know long before arriving at school the next day.

"Any more, they know everything before they go to bed," Wildman said. "I think most of the kids that know him have all the information they need."

Wildman said counselor and assistant basketball coach Brian Gardner and physical education teacher and head basketball coach Troy Burgess traveled to Methodist on Monday to be with Pell and his family. The junior played guard for the Eagles' varsity team this season.

Meanwhile, North Salem State Bank announced Tuesday that it has set up an open account for anyone who wants to help the family with Logan's medical bills and related expenses.

Deposits can be made at any of the NSSB branches at Greencastle, Waveland, Danville (two locations) or North Salem.

Those wishing to mail in a donation may do so to: North Salem State Bank, P.O. Box 142, Greencastle, IN 46135, Attn: Vicki.
