Phil Gick seeking re-election to Putnam County Council seat
Putnam County native Phillip Gick is a candidate for re-election to the Putnam County Council on the Republican ballot in the May 8 primary.
Gick returned to Greencastle in 2006 after serving in the U.S. Army for 30 years.
While in the Army, he led and directed organizations from small teams to units with thousands of personnel. He has hands-on experience in operations, analysis, budget, training, logistics and personnel management. His awards included two Defense Superior Service Medals, the Legion of Merit, and the Bronze Star Medal.
Gick received his bachelor's degree in history from Indiana University and his master's in national security affairs from U.S. Naval Postgraduate School.
He and wife "George" celebrate their 37th wedding anniversary in 2012 and have three children and six grandchildren. He describes himself as "a devoted family man."
For "fun" the Gicks are restoring Greencastle's Hazelett House (circa 1868).
Gick recognizes being raised in a great community where people help their neighbors and support their community. The Army community is like that, he said, embracing that philosophy.
Passionate about American history and preservation, Gick is actively involved in bringing thousands in grant money to the community and saving historic structures as president of the Heritage Preservation Society of Putnam County. He spearheaded efforts to get three Greencastle historic districts listed on the National Register and helped get Greencastle identified "Best Place to Buy an Old House" in This Old House magazine.
Gick believes "we must live within our means." Since being appointed to the County Council in December 2010, he has worked hard to keep Putnam County's budget consistent with this philosophy, and "hopes to continue serving Putnam County's citizens on the County Council."
