City Police

A traffic accident occurred Friday morning right in front of the Greencastle Police Department on North Jackson Street.

Assistant Chief Brian Hopkins actually heard the impact, police officials reported, and ran outside to discover a two-car accident at the intersection of North Jackson and New York streets.

Melba Turner, 78, Greencastle, had reportedly stopped her 2002 Dodge Neon on New York Street, waiting to cross Jackson Street, but because of glare from the sun in her eyes apparently did not see a northbound 1995 Saturn, driven by Elizabeth Cox, 18, Greencastle.

When Turner pulled out onto Jackson Street, a collision occurred, resulting in damage estimated at $1,000-$2,500.

Assisting Hopkins were Officers Terry Eastham and Mike Hanlon.

Two citations were issued recently by city officers.

-- At 11:20 p.m. Thursday, Christopher Leathers, 29, Greencastle, was cited on North Indiana Street for an infraction of driving with a suspended license.

-- At 10:35 p.m. Thursday, Gerald Root, 51, Bainbridge, was cited by Officer Nick Eastham for 52 mph in a 30-mph zone on Bloomington Street.
