Cougars shoot well, come up short against Danville

The North Putnam boys' golf team narrowly missed defeating Danville Tuesday, falling 181-192. The Cougars had been on a two-week hiatus without any competition since April 24, but kept the final score in suspense until the last group of golfers posted their scores.

As scores were coming in for the meet, Danville player Weaver carded a 38, which was his best score of the season. Normally shooting in the mid-40s, Weaver made the stretch between the two widen, however, there was still hope that one of the final two players for the Cougars could come in with a low enough score to either tie or win the meet.

Lance Clodfelter was the score the Cougars were waiting for, carding a 47, which wasn't enough for a win, but was a good score for the striker. Jake Smith and Jon Willard both shot a 48 and Mason Asher had a good night by recording only 13 putts and carded a 49. Danny Smith shot a 54, struggling all night with penalties, putting and according to his head coach, concentration. Emmett Holsapple scored a 58.

The Cougars' score of 192 continued a streak of team scores under 200, a goal the team set at the start of the season.

North Putnam will compete today at the Putnam County Touranment and Saturday in the West Central Conference match. Head coach Linda Patrick feels her team can do well with the right approach with their game.

"There are several Cougar players that could really do well at both meets with the proper mental game working, making consistent shots, think good strategy for each shot, as well as all good things coming together for them in one meet," Patrick said.
