City Police

Two women were arrested Tuesday evening for an alleged theft at the Greencastle Walmart store.

Arrested at 6:35 p.m. by Sgt. Chris Jones and lodged in the Putnam County Jail on theft charges were Robin Broyles, 50, Roachdale, and Drema Surber, 26, Ladoga.

The women are accused of attempting to steal more than $100 in miscellaneous merchandise by hiding the items under a couple of bags of soil in their cart or concealing them in their purses.

Items reportedly stolen were bug repellant, flower seed, bath towels, hand towels, sunglasses, a shower curtain, shower curtain rod and hooks and a toothbrush cup holder.

Two recent traffic accidents were investigated by city officers.

-- At 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, a two-vehicle accident was reported at Percy Julian Drive and State Road 240.

Andrew Dunn, 15, Brazil, was operating a 2007 Honda scooter southbound on Percy Julian as Darryl Starr, 63, Greencastle, was eastbound on State Road 240 in a 2005 Dodge Dakota.

The vehicles collided in the intersection, resulting in an estimated $2,500-$5,000 damage, according to Officer Nick Eastham's report.

Dunn suffered multiple cuts and scrapes and was transported to Putnam County Hospital via Operation Life ambulance.

-- At 2:14 p.m. Monday, a two-vehicle accident on Indianapolis Road resulted in an estimated $2,500-$5,000 damage.

Robert Matson, 42, Greencastle, was stopped westbound in a 2007 Ford F-150, waiting for another vehicle to turn left, when his pickup was struck from behind by a 2003 Ford Windstar, driven by Gary Jones, 67, Greencastle.

Jones told police he did not see that the Matson truck was stopped in traffic until it was too late to avoid the collision.

Sheriff's Department

* On Thursday, May 24 at 7:15 a.m. Betty J. Johnson, 66, Lebanon, was westbound on Interstate 70 in a 2008 Hyundai Sonata.

She was exiting at the 41-mile marker ramp when she swerved to miss an animal. The car went into the ditch and went airborne, landing between the exit ramp and I-70.

Johnson complained of back pain and was treated by Operation Life.

Damage $1,001-$2,500.

* At 1:45 p.m. Storme Jaynes, 33, Avon, was westbound in the Ivanwald subdivision in a 2009 Toyota Camry when a dog entered the road.

Jaynes swerved to miss the dog and left the right side of the road. His car hit a boat trailer and a mailbox at 3502 W. Ivanwald Dr.

Damage $2,501-$5,000.

County Jail

Two people were booked into the Putnam County Jail recently.

* On Tuesday, May 29 at 2:15 p.m. Christina Michelle Matthews, 38, Greencastle, was arrested for trafficking contraband with an inmate, violation of home detention and false informing.

* On Wednesday, May 30 at 6:19 a.m. Nicholas Eugene Weddell, 31, Greencastle, was charged with battery and residential entry.
