New round of street closings includes 231/Bloomington St.

Monday, June 18, 2012
Pointing the way south, a U.S. 231 detour sign was already in place Sunday on the west side of the courthouse square in Greencastle. U.S. 231 traffic will be detoured over South Jackson Street and Veterans Highway for the next five days because of construction projects on Bloomington Street between Washington and Hanna streets.

Greencastle Mayor Sue Murray has announced a list of expected road closures and disruptions that local residents may anticipate for the week of June18.

-- Locust Street will remain closed at the Anderson Street intersection adjacent to DePauw University's East College. That closing began June 11 and could last up to 45 days.

-- U.S. 231/Bloomington Street will be closed at the Anderson Street intersection for up to five days during this initial closing.

-- The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) is planning a project involving the milling and resurfacing of U.S. 231/Bloomington Street between Washington and Seminary streets on Monday and Tuesday (June 18-19), weather permitting.

-- Indiana Street will be closed from Washington Street south to the alley next to Cinergy Metronet for up to five days.

"This construction season is indeed filled with challenges," Mayor Murray conceded, "and I want to thank you, in advance, for your patience. We will be sending out notifications regularly to keep you apprised of traffic concerns."

In weeks to come, closures on Albin Pond Road for the upcoming dam repair project and other Stellar Project-related street closings and delays for construction will be necessary, Mayor Murray said.

Meanwhile, the Bloomington Street construction closing will create an additional problem on Anderson Street, which is normally one-way eastbound from Bloomington Street to Wood Street.

To keep Anderson Street residents who live west of Arlington and east of Bloomington from being isolated without a legal way to drive to their homes, two-way traffic will be allowed on Anderson between Arlington and Bloomington during any construction closures, the City Council has agreed.

However, the section east of Arlington to Wood street will remain one-way eastbound since that portion of Anderson Street can be accessed by taking Seminary Street and turning south onto Arlington Street and then turning east (left) onto Anderson.

  • The city and/or state painted a double yellow center line on South Jackson Street last night...just after midnight. DPU, the city and state are doing a fine job of keeping things moving.

  • So it will be almost impossible to get around in Greencastle. Wait until Bloomington street is closed for an extended period later this year so DPU's work can continue. And are you kidding about Anderson St being two way partly and then changing back to one way. That should be interesting. I hope the children who have lived on Anderson St all of their lives now know to look for traffic coming both ways.

  • Good planners answered the KNOCK OF OPPORTUNITY and the intersection of 231 & Washington Street is being repaired.

  • who is the joker that planned the re-routing of traffic??? all day long semi's are getting stuck and holding traffic up at wood and seminary st. how could any planner think that routing monster semi's down that street to make the wood st turn would be a wise decision?? cars are backed up and waiting 10 minutes or more for a semi to maneuver back and forth 5 times to make the turn. that surely will get fixed quickly i hope!!!! what was the southern highway built for???? cant we easily deter them to that huge road before they get to seminary st???

  • Glad for the street improvements. Something that should be noticed because of past experiences -- the weight of those heavy trucks and machinery doing the work will damage the utility lines underground as the trucks, etc., sit with idling/vibrating engines on the streets. So expect a round of utility line repairs next year, with the obligatory road cuts into once-smooth pavement.

  • Usually it is the week of the 4H fair that road-work north of town on 231 is in progress. Always 'a fun time!' Now, this year we get to experience a small preview of the traffic mess we will experience during the 4H fair. All those visitors with trailers, campers, and machinery along with our current maze of roadways and traffic - can it get any better!
