* A one-vehicle crash on Sunday evening, June 24 resulted in the arrest of a Cloverdale man for operating while intoxicated.

Shortly before 6:30 p.m. Stephen A. Gouckenour, 36, was southbound on Lafayette Street in Cloverdale when the tie rod on his 1999 Chevrolet Monte Carlo broke. He lost control of his vehicle, leaving the west side of the road and hitting two mailboxes and a tree. This caused his vehicle to flip onto its top in the middle of Lafayette Street.

When Deputy Mike Downing arrived, Gouckenour was being combative with medic personnel as they were trying to assess if he had injuries. He refused medical attention.

Gouckenour smelled of alcoholic beverages, his eyes were bloodshot, his speech was slurred and he had poor balance. Downing asked if he had been drinking, and Gouckenour confirmed that he had.

Downing administered three field sobriety tests, all of which Gouckenour failed. He then administered the portable breath test, and Gouckenour registered at .16 percent blood alcohol content.

The deputy detained Gouckenour and put him in the back of his car. As Downing continued to gather information, Gouckenour attempted to escape. Downing belted him back into the car and proceeded to the Putnam County Jail.

On the certified breath test at the jail, Gouckenour's blood alcohol content also registered at .16 percent. He was booked into the jail at 7:51 p.m. for operating while intoxicated.
