North Vernon woman caught trafficking at prison

PUTNAMVILLE -- A North Vernon woman landed in the Putnam County Jail after attempting to take a controlled substance, marijuana, and other contraband to an inmate at Putnamville Correctional Facility.

Samantha Ann Hill, 25, was arrested at the prison Tuesday and charged with two counts of trafficking with an inmate.

Intelligence gathered by the prison's internal affairs staff revealed that Hill was conspiring to traffic with offender David Calvert, 25, of Seymour.

When she arrived at the facility to visit Calvert, Hill was placed under surveillance and was observed attempting to retrieve an article from inside her clothing.

The visit was immediately terminated and Hill was escorted to the internal affairs office where she voluntarily surrendered the article to Assistant Superintendent of Re-entry Beckie Bennett.

An inventory of the article confiscated from Hill included the controlled substance suboxone, marijuana, tobacco and rolling papers.

Hill was taken into custody by Correctional Police Officer David Wire and transported to the Putnam County Jail, where she was booked in at 12:47 p.m.

Calvert is serving a sentence for felony counts of burglary and possession of firearms with a projected release date of Oct. 14, 2015. He is currently being housed in administrative segregation and could be facing criminal charges pending the outcome of an investigation.

"Staff received information and acted swiftly to apprehend the individuals involved in the illegal activity," PCF Superintendent Stanley Knight said. "We will continue to utilize every resource available to us to stop this type of behavior in our prison."
