Secrest leads GHS boys cross country

VEEDERSBURG --After conditioning all summer the Greencastle boys' cross country team was tested at one of the state's top three hardest courses at Twin Lakes in the Fountain Central Grand Prix.

There were 19 teams present and 97 athletes competing in the varsity race. Greencastle's Taylor Secrest was the top runner for GHS finishing fifth overall and only five seconds off his personal record, with a time of 17:41.

Tyler Hudson followed Secrest across the line in 14th with a time of 18:17, with Elijah Brattain finishing 19th in a time of 18:56. Matthew White was 36th with a time of 19:58.

The fifth and final scorer for Greencastle was a freshman, Jacob Lewis, who ran a solid time of 20:05 in his first official 5k.

Levi Lewis also ran a strong race finishing in 20:22, only eight seconds off of his PR. Cory Lyons finished out the top seven with a time of 21:56, putting two freshmen, and three sophomore in the top seven.

"For such a young team I really felt they competed like a good veteran team," head coach Art Dwigans said. "As we continue to work and the boys become more confident in my coaching and our program, I really feel we will have a very strong, young team.

"I was really pleased with the overall effort from the boys, while competing on the toughest course we will see this year, seven of our 11 runners ran PRs or were within 10 seconds of their best effort. With this being our first meet of the year, I'm really excited with the possibilities of our team."
