Powers received his diploma in automotive, diesel and industrial technology with EPA 609 certification. He also earned student of the course in power & performance, manual transmission and advanced diagnostics. Powers graduated with high GPA honors, excellent attendance award, and Alpha Beta Kappa.

Local students took the first step in becoming Boilermakers by participating in the annual Summer Transition, Advising and Registration (STAR) program at Purdue University's West Lafayette campus.

STAR is Purdue's program for new undergraduate students to receive academic advice and create their initial course schedule. Incoming students select their one-day STAR session and come to Purdue's West Lafayette campus to conduct this and other important business.

Local participants included: CAMERON MANN of Cloverdale; BRENTON VOGT, TRAVIS DUNN, PAIGE DRURY and JOSHUA WILSON of Coatesville; STEPHEN REED and JUSTIN MONTGOMERY of Fillmore; NATHANIEL SECREST, EMILY GILL, RILEY SEAHORN, RYAN STEVENS, MADISON MARSTELLER, JOSEPH KAISER, KADEN FAUST, MATHEW HENDRICH, CHARLES STRUNK, JARED JAMES and DIANE WOKOUN of Greencastle; TAYLOR CURTIS and ALEXANDRA LAWSON of North Salem; HANNAH ZEHNER, CHELSEA DAVIS, TARI STRAZISCAR, VALERIE SCOTT, DALTON HARBISON AND DANIELLE HARBISON of Roachdale; HOLLY HOPKINS of Russellville; and SAMANTHA COOPER and JOSEPH FIDLER of Quincy.

SARAH CHEATHAM of Greencastle participated in the University of Evansville freshman service project on Monday, Aug. 20.

The project sent new UE students to 20 locations throughout Evansville -- including parks, community centers and other nonprofit organizations -- to perform tasks ranging from painting to cleaning to landscaping.

The freshman service project is part of Welcome Week, a program designed to help incoming students transition into college life before classes begin.

"The goal of the Freshman Service Project is to help new students such as Sarah Cheatham get acquainted with the community they'll call home during their college years," said Geoff Edwards, director of UE's Center for Student Engagement and coordinator of the Freshman Service Project. "Last year, UE students contributed more than 19,000 hours of community service, and we hope the Freshman Service Project inspires many students to continue serving the Evansville community."
