Clovers JV wins county championship

The Cloverdale junior varsity volleyball team won the 2012 Putnam County Championship Saturday over North Putnam. ROACHDALE -- After dropping the opening set of the Putnam County junior varsity volleyball championship, Cloverdale earned a 2-1 win to claim the title.

In the opening set, Cloverdale went up 3-0, but North Putnam battle back to tie it up six-all. The Cougars scored the next three points to take an advantage they never relinquished.

North Putnam continued to add to its tally point by point before Cloverdale was able to close the gap to two points at 22-20. However, the Cougars steady themselves and won the first set 25-21.

Staring at a one-game deficit, the Clovers found their groove and raced out to a 13-4 lead. Cloverdale let North Putnam battled its way back within one at 15-14 and ultimately tie it at 21-all before Lexi Brannaman put the set away with a stuff block. The Clovers won 25-21 to set up a third and final set for all the marbles.

In the final set, the teams battled five-all, but Cloverdale went on a seven-point run powered by Jessica Winders serving to take a 12-5 advantage.

With the score 14-7 in favor of the Clovers, Kimmy Winders blasted a shot the Cougars couldn't return to give Cloverdale its 15th point and the title of Putnam County champs.
