Raises one step closer for Greencastle employees

Friday, September 14, 2012

It can't be made official until October, but raises for fulltime city employees look even more promising.

Having discussed the possibility of $1,000 pay increases for all fulltime city employees -- excluding elected officials -- during August budget discussions, the Greencastle City Council on Tuesday approved the first reading of an ordinance to enact the raises.

The raises cannot become official until the Oct. 10 city council meeting, at which time both the 2013 budget and the second reading of the salary ordinance will be on the agenda.

Official or not, city council members sounded confident the raises would be enacted.

"As always, we're appreciative of all of the people," Council President Adam Cohen said. "I'm sure we don't pay them what they deserve."

"At least we can give them a raise," Councilman Mark Hammer chimed in.
