On Friday, Sept. 21, county rival football teams will work together to collect coats as a kickoff to the 13th annual Coats for Kids Campaign. Teams will set aside their rivalries as North Putnam plays Greencastle and Cloverdale faces off with South Putnam.

The teams will compete to see who can collect the most coats prior to and before the end of the football game. The teams are uniting as one in an effort to provide coats for so many of Putnam County's children.

The goal is to collect as many coats as possible while embracing the competition between the teams. The winning teams will receive a trophy and a place on the annual "Hall of Fame" plaque.

The Greencastle students participating are: Brayden Watson, Heaven Smeelink, Ashtin Ford, Hunter Smith, Ellen Gobert, Taylor Downing, Taylor Secrest, Landon Miller, Jodi Buis, Elijah Brattain, Kristen Stevens, Logan Beck, Diana Divine, Lily Spencer, Samantha Haynes, Allison White, Ashlyn Cox, Mitchell Johnson, Liz Johnson, Corrie Romer, Levi Lewis and Assistant Principal Russ Hesler. The North Putnam participants are: Autumn McClellan, Kayla Miller, Trenton Osborn, Brooke Mathews, Sam Lucas and Katie Welch. (Courtesy photo)

Cloverdale and South Putnam were the winners for the first two years, but Greencastle and North Putnam moved to the winning spot this last year. Elementary schools also take part in their own competition that will begin in the next two weeks.

Coats for Kids signature boxes will be located at businesses throughout the area starting Sept. 28.

Donations of new or gently used coats will be accepted. Coats that must be cleaned should not be donated. All sizes from infant to teen years will be accepted.

Coats will be distributed on Saturday, Oct. 27 from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. at Harris Hall at the Putnam County Fairgrounds.

This program would not continue without the generosity of the Putnam County community and community sponsors: Jackie Baumann and the PC Homemakers Extension Club, Teena Bryant and FB Distro, Walmart Supercenter, United Way of Putnam County, Kappa Delta Phi Sorority, DePauw University Athletic Department and the Putnam County schools that support this event annually.

Persons may contact Linda Merkel at the PC Youth Development Commission with any questions at 653-9342.
