League of Women Voters of Greencastle launches voter registration campaign

Thursday, September 20, 2012

The League of Women Voters of Greencastle announced today that it is launching a voter registration campaign in order to engage new voters before the November election.

The deadline to register to vote in Indiana is Oct. 9.

The League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan political organization, encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy. The League never supports or opposes any political candidate or party.

League volunteers will be registering voters on next Tuesday, Sept. 25 from 8 a.m. to noon at McDonald's at the corner of Indianapolis Road and Percy Julian Drive. Volunteers will also be present from 2-6 p.m. at the same place in order to reach as many voters as possible before the deadline.

The League's work to register voters is needed now more than ever. Voter registration is a critical step to making sure our voters rolls -- and our halls of power -- actually reflect the diversity of our communities, Elizabeth McNamara, president of the National LWV, has said.

According to Census data, nonpartisan groups like the League are responsible for registering large numbers of voters who otherwise would have been left out of the voting process -- including young people, new citizens and Americans without college degrees. Nationwide, League volunteers are hosting hundreds of registration events and bringing tens of thousand of new voters onto the rolls.
