Strategic innovation subject of free event from Ivy Tech

TERRE HAUTE -- Jim Bowie, an expert strategic planner, performance improvement specialist and author of "Lean Acres: A Tale of Strategic Innovation and Improvement in a Farm-Iliar Setting," will present "Strategic Innovation and Improvement" as part of a free event on Thursday, Oct. 11.

The 1-5 p.m. presentation will be in the Oakley Auditorium at Ivy Tech Community College, 8000 S. Education Drive in Terre Haute.

"Using the basic quality methodologies, Mr. Bowie shares how to apply these to everyone's continuous improvement efforts," said Staci Brown, manager of Apprenticeship Programs for Ivy Tech Community College, Wabash Valley.

Bowie is a former U.S. Army Infantry Officer and an Operation Iraqi Freedom veteran. He is certified in Kaplan-Norton Balanced Scorecard, is a Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt (including ASQ Certified Six Sigma Black Belt), an ASQ Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence, a certified Project Management Professional, and a certified facilitator.

He has studied at Salisbury University, Villanova University, University of Tennessee, Yale School of Management, Auburn University, and he is currently pursuing a doctoral degree.

Sponsored by Ivy Tech Corporate College and the Wabash Valley section of ASQ, this event is designed to highlight resources available for business leaders to improve quality through proven techniques.

"One of our goals is to show what talent and resources are available right here for local businesses and organizations to employ in enhancing the quality of their services, products and processes," said Michael Hayden, Wabash Valley ASQ chairman and professor of Applied Engineering and Technology Management at Indiana State University.

Several organizations will display during the Quality Resource Fair from 1-2 p.m. Bowie will speak from 2-4 p.m., and sign books during a 4-5 p.,. meet-and-greet session.

Attendees may stay for the joint dinner meeting of ASQ, the American Society of Materials, and the Society of Manufacturing Engineers that follows at 5:30 p.m.

Cost of the dinner is $10 for professionals and $6 for students.
