Variety of programs offered yet this month by City Parks Dept.

Friday, October 19, 2012

Upcoming events sponsored during October by the Greencastle Parks and Recreation Department include a new mini-career day program titled "Mom, Dad, I want to be a ..."

The first program in that series will be "Mom, Dad, I want to be a Pilot," scheduled for 6:30-8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25 in the Ridpath Primary School cafeteria.

Youngsters in grades 2-6 and already thinking of what different jobs may be available to them in the future are invited and urged to enroll.

The program will help them learn what different types of pilots there are and why some people fly for fun and others fly as a job.

"We have asked the speakers to prepare for second- to sixth-graders and their parents," Park Activity Director Troy Scott said, "but all ages are welcome.

"We will offer several different careers over the next several weeks. You may come to one or come for all. Each week we will have a different career or job discussed."

Snacks and drinks will be provided. Fee for the "Mom, Dad, I want to be a ..." program is $5 per youngster per session or $15 per family.

Other Greencastle Parks and Recreation Department programs for October include:

-- Saturday Stations from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20 in the Kiwanis Room at the Putnam County Public Library.

The group will be carving apples to make shrunken heads, pumpkin decorating, and creating with Mr. Potato Head.

A $5 donation per youth is suggested to cover supplies. Pre-registration is requested.

Registration forms are available at City Hall, the Putnam County Museum, Putnam County Public Library or Greencastle Pediatric Dentistry or email a request to tscott@cityofgreencastle.com.

-- Mommy and Me, the Holiday Edition. It will close out the fourth session of Mommy and Me for 2012. Included are the stories behind the holiday seasons, how each holiday was established, complete with holiday-themed games, crafts and snacks.

Participants may even leave with new food ideas or a new secret family recipe for that special holiday dinner. Locations will rotate between the Putnam County Museum, the Putnam County Public Library and possibly other sites.

Since ingredients for those secret recipes will need to be purchased, pre-registration is required with five participants needed to hold the event. (Note: Daycares are welcome, but it is asked that they call in advance).

Dates of the program are Wednesdays, Oct. 24 and 31, Nov. 7, 14, 28 and Dec. 5, 12. The Oct. 24 program will be in the Kiwanis Room of the Putnam County Library.

Cost is $25 per session.

-- Pink Halloween Fun Run. The Greencastle Running and Fitness Club and the American Cancer Society are co-sponsoring the third annual Halloween 5K Fun Run/Walk.

The purpose of this event is to get the community together for fun healthy fitness. Participants are encouraged to dress in costumes but running shoes must be worn. Outfits must be family appropriate and need to be safe for running.

Date of the fun run is Saturday, Oct. 27, starting at 9 a.m. with registration beginning at 8 a.m. at shelterhouse No. 5 in Robe-Ann Park.

The fun run is free, although donations can be made to the American Cancer Society.

-- Walking Wednesdays is set for 5-6 p.m. Oct. 24 on the Albin Pond Trail, starting at the Tzouanakis Intermediate School lot. Program is free.
