DePauw Chamber Players to perform Tuesday for ArtsFest

Monday, October 29, 2012

ArtsFest 2012 continues Tuesday with a performance by the DePauw Chamber Players, composed of School of Music faculty pianist May Phang, violinist Dan Rizner and cellist Eric Edberg.

The ensemble will explore the theme "Art and the Other" through compositions by Robert Schumann, Rebecca Clarke and Libby Larsen. The concert is set for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Thompson Recital Hall of the Green Center for the Performing Arts at DPU.

"Schumann suffered from mental illness and in that sense was 'the other,'" noted Edberg, professor of cello and coordinator of the school's string division. "He also was an influential critic who wrote with disdain for the 'Philistines' ('others' to him), who couldn't comprehend or appreciate what he saw as true art."

"Rebecca Clarke was marginalized as a 'woman' composer, the 'other' in a male-dominated classical music culture," Edberg added. "Libby Larsen, who came of age during the feminist revolution, is regarded as one of the major classical composers of our time, no longer a 'woman composer.' Her piece, 'Three for the Road,' is inspired by boogie-woogie, which represents classical music embracing what it once regarded as 'the other.'"

General admission tickets to the DP Chamber Players' concert are $3. Admission for all Putnam County students and for seniors is free. Tickets may be purchased online at www.depauw.edu/music/tickets.
