Dan Foster leads DePauw Jazz Ensemble in performance on Friday

Friday, November 2, 2012

The DePauw Jazz Ensemble, directed by Dan Foster, will round out ArtFest 2012 on with a concert in Kresge Auditorium at the Green Center for the Performing Arts tonight at 7:30 p.m.

The program will feature various styles within the modern jazz idiom. Funk and rock fusion-influenced music by Les Hooper, new Los Angeles composer/arranger Dave Richards and Radiohead, along with classic standards from the Count Basie Orchestra and Buddy Rich libraries will be performed.

Foster joined the DePauw University School of Music faculty in August as its new director of jazz ensembles, after receiving his bachelor's degree in trumpet performance from Mansfield University of Pennsylvania and his master's degree in jazz studies from the University of North Texas College of Music in Denton, Texas.

While at North Texas, Foster was the lead trumpet player for UNT's world-renowned and Grammy-nominated One O'clock Lab Band for two years, backing such artists as Lyle Mays, John Mosca, Wayne Bergeron, Denis DiBlasio, Tim Ries and Bernard Fowler.

Since moving to Greencastle, Foster has felt right at home in the community and with students and fellow faculty members in the music program.

"I am particularly pleased to be working with such a high caliber of students," Foster said. "Their hard work is extremely evident in their execution of professional-level big band literature -- proof of which the audience will clearly hear in their concert Friday night."

General admission tickets to the jazz concert are $3. All students and seniors over 65 are free.
