Indianapolis Symphony returns to work, brings stellar guest and music to Greencastle

Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Krzysztof Urbanski, will perform a Spanish-themed program with classical guitarist Miloš Karadaglić at the Green Center for the Performing Arts on Sunday, Nov. 11 at 3 p.m.

The classical music world and the citizens of Indiana breathed a sigh of relief when the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra settled the work stoppage that kept them from performing for several months.

One of the first appearances of the ensemble's season will be in Greencastle on Sunday, Nov. 11 at 3 p.m. at the Green Center for the Performing Arts.

"We are positively thrilled to see that the ISO is performing together again," remarked Mark McCoy, dean of the DePauw University School of Music, which will host the orchestra as a part of its new Guest Artist Series. "Especially when that performance is here in our community.

"Putnam County recognizes the ISO for the national treasure it is, and the orchestra returns here each season because we always have large appreciative houses for their performances."

The highlight of the Sunday matinee concert will be classical guitarist Miloš Karadaglić, recipient of the 2011 Gramophone Award for young artist of the year, in the hauntingly beautiful Rodrigo Guitar Concerto, the "Concierto De Aranjuez."

It is considered by some to be one of the greatest pieces ever written and has had great influence on musicians from Al Jarreau and Miles Davis to Led Zeppelin. The slow adagio movement also includes one of the most recognized melodies of all time.

The ISO's Spanish-themed program will feature works appealing to all ages, regardless of prior exposure to classical music, including Ravel's "Alborada del gracioso" (Morning Song of a Jester), Turina's "Sinfonia Sevillana" and Rimsky-Korsakov's perennial favorite "Capriccio Espagnol."

"The Midwest and Indiana are very fortunate to have one of only a handful of full-time professional orchestras in America in residence in Indianapolis," said McCoy. "That we can have one of America's great orchestras play each season in Putnam County is a gift to us all."

As ISO concerts often sell-out, the box office is encouraging people to get their tickets now. General admission tickets are $10 in advance and $12 the day of the concert. All students and seniors over 65 are free.
